Over Stimulation

I have noticed recently that Jack gets extremely over-stimulated and then finds it hard to feed or sleep. Over the weekend we had good friends visiting from out of town, so he was being passed around and played with by new people. He is so excited (he has FOMO big time) and curious that I didn’t really think too much about it.

We were all outside, with music playing when suddenly he started screaming. Not crying with tears, frustrated bursts of angry screams with his little fists tightly bunched.

He would shout and then look at us. And continued like this for a while. We tried everything we could think of to sooth him but nothing worked. Until I took him inside to the calm lounge where he immediately quietened down and started feeding and soon fell asleep.

Later that evening he was very energised and wouldn’t fall asleep at bed time. There seems to have been a two-day lag effect as last night was also a break from routine where he fell asleep at 7pm and woke at midnight (normally it’s 9pm sleep with a wake up at around 3:30am) I have read a lot about this over-stimulation theory and it does make a lot of sense. I’m not sure I would do anything differently as I like him being with us all the time, but it’s worth baring in mind as it does impact your routine for a few days at least.
